Cupcake cakes are not just for high tea, birthdays, children’s parties or weddings! They come in all sorts of colours and designs and the only thing that limits them is the imagination of the decorator!

Why the name cupcake cakes (or perhaps cup cakes)?  The answer is actually quite simple.  Well, way way back when we were just a dot in our ancestor’s eyes, paper cases or muffin tins were not around so the little cakes were baked in pottery cups, hence ‘cup’ cake! The term can be used to describe all small cakes that are no bigger than a teacup.

One of the beauties of cupcake cakes is that they can be themed not only to the occasion, but also to the personality of the individuals who may be eating them.  An old fashioned violet for grandma perhaps, ballet shoes for a little girl or a racing car or football for a little boy (or perhaps Dad!), music symbols for a musician.  You can really let you imagination run riot and have a lot of fun. It doesn’t really matter if you mess one up, as you’ll have plenty more to experiment on and they are so easy to make what’s stopping you?!

Over the past few years, cupcake cakes have become a popular choice for weddings; replacing the traditional 3 tier cake, there are now some wonderful wedding cake stands that are specifically designed for these little beauties. May be your intended could get a wedding proposal on a cupcake, now wouldn’t that be romantic!

You can top your little cakes with whipped cream, icing, butter cream or fondant. Use stencils to paint on designs, add some of the many commercially available little toppers, and mould fondant into little people or animals. The choice really is endless.

So, go and try out your imagination and skill on some cupcake cakes as they are a fabulous way to start to learn about cake decorating without making expensive mistakes.
