There are many books on the market about starting a cake decorating business and as with most things, some are probably better than others!
Having had a look at a few, there are a couple we can recommend along with the front cover pictures that will link you to the site if you want to find out more. This page will be added to on a regular basis but if you have any of your own recommendations, please post them up with a review.
1) Start A Cake Business Today
by Paula Spencer (2008) may seem a bit quite pricey at $28.95 for a 100 page book but then again, this type of specialist book usually isn’t particularly cheap. With only 100 pages, at least you’ll be able to find the information you want quickly. This book combines the business start-up knowledge and cake decorating experience and puts it in an easily readable format.
Covering from start-up considerations to business issues such as marketing, advertising, insurance taxes, this book also gives you a legal checklist which is certainly handy! Food safety, how to deal with business baking, contracts and building a portfolio are also covered.
The reviews of this book are good so whatever reason you are starting your business, you will find it covers a lot of different situations that you will meet as you venture into this new world. Go read the customer reviews for yourself.
2) Start My New Cake Decorating Business by Lee Lister (2009) is a very recent addition to the book shelf and, as such, there don’t seem to be very many customer reviews. We have had a quick look at this 112 page edition, which comes in a couple of dollars cheaper than Paula’s, but it does have a different approach.
Whereas Paula’s includes a lot of the business and legal side of things, Lee seems to provide a step-by-step guide for a big range of scenarios that you will certainly need to be aware of. The book also includes the top five mistakes that newbies make as well as a lot of cake decorating tips and solutions to some of the most common mistakes.
The book also tells you what to do about your business when you go on holiday (possible unlikely for the first year!).
Despite the lack of customer reviews, this one looks like a useful book that will take you past the initial start-up itself.

Great information!
I’m personally a big fan of Paula’s work – it’s a good book.
For anyone looking to start any business, I always recommend the e-myth revisited, even if it has little to “directly” do with cake decorating!
